Robert E.B. Hewitt III
Mr. Hewitt focuses his practice on premises liability cases, as well as automotive liability, insurance coverage and general liability defense including commercial and employment litigation. He has experience in all aspects of litigation including drafting and arguing motions to dismiss and summary judgment, and participating in hearings, mediations, depositions and drafting appeals. Mr. Hewitt has experience defending clients in both state and federal court, as well as before a number of administrative agencies.
Mr. Hewitt has experience defending premises liability claims (including cases involving trip and falls, sidewalk defects, slips on snow and ice, fires, defective conditions, water leaks, and animal injuries) and claims involving motor vehicle accidents, property damage, and bodily injury claims. He also has litigated construction accident cases and has experience defending employers in discrimination cases relating to race, gender, religion, disability, and age discrimination before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, New York State Division of Human Rights, and New York State and federal courts. Mr. Hewitt has defended professional liability actions against attorneys, insurance brokers and medical professionals. Mr. Hewitt has also counseled insurers on coverage issues involving the investigation and litigation of claims arising under homeowner and commercial policies, such as claims involving arson, fraud, property damage and personal injury.
He served as a law clerk to the Hon. Dennis E. Milton, a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge in the Eastern District of New York where he drafted extensive draft decisions on Chapter 7, Chapter 11, and Chapter 13 bankruptcy matters, as well as related state court issues, researching, preparing summaries and recommendations for judicial review.
Mr. Hewitt graduated from Hofstra University at the top of his class, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, with dual degrees in history and psychology and received his law degree from Hofstra University School of Law where he graduated as valedictorian, receiving the Maurice A. Dean award and was Associate Editor of the Hofstra Law Review.
Mr. Hewitt is a member of the Nassau County Bar Association, the Defense Association of New York, and the New York State Bar Association, where he is a member of the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law section.
