Mr. Kohane is a nationally recognized insurance coverage counselor with a statewide and national practice who serves as an expert witness, conducts extensive training, consultation and in-house seminars on this highly specialized practice. Mr. Kohane is also known in the industry for his comprehensive newsletter, Coverage Pointers, a bi-weekly publication summarizing important insurance coverage decisions in New York State courts with overviews of other jurisdictions.
A senior member at Hurwitz & Fine, P.C., Mr. Kohane has distinguished himself in managing the ever-evolving area of insurance coverage serving regional, national and international clients. An accomplished trial lawyer and litigator, Mr. Kohane is also active behind the scenes, advising clients on a broad range of matters involving litigation including insurance coverage, bad faith, tort defense and professional ethics. Mr. Kohane also has extensive experience in mediating complex casualty and insurance coverage disputes. In 2009, he was asked to serve on the American Arbitration Association Complex Coverage Neutral Evaluation Panel and has completed American Arbitration Association Commercial Arbitration training.
Mr. Kohane is a graduate of the University at Buffalo Law School where he received the Trial Lawyers Association award for excellence in trial practice. He received his undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz.
The first recipient of the Young Lawyer’s Award from the Insurance, Negligence and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar Association, he served as legislative assistant to the New York State Assembly Judiciary Committee. He teaches Insurance Law as an adjunct professor at the University at Buffalo Law School. He heads the firm’s Insurance Coverage and Extra Contractual Liability, Class Actions/Mass Torts and ADR practice groups.
Mr. Kohane is a member of the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar Association, a member of the Erie County Bar Association and the Western New York Trial Lawyers Association. Mr. Kohane is the former President of the Erie County Bar Foundation. An active industry participant, Mr. Kohane is Past President and Board Chair of the highly selective Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC), having previously chaired the FDCC’s Insurance Coverage Section and founded the FDCC website (www.thefederation.org). He is a former director of the Defense Research Institute (DRI) where he is a member of the Insurance Law Steering Committee, chaired the 2010 Insurance Coverage and Practice Symposium, and is Program Chair for the National Foundation for Judicial Excellence’s 2012 Judicial Symposium. He is also a former director of the Lawyers for Civil Justice.
Also an active member of the Western New York community, Mr. Kohane is past Chair of the Board of Managers of the Buffalo Convention Center, past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Greater Buffalo Convention and Visitors Bureau and serves on the Board of Housing Opportunities Made Equal, Inc.
