Seeley Presented Prestigious Hurwitz Award By State Bar

Audrey A. Seeley was presented the Sheldon Hurwitz Young Lawyer of the Year Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the field by the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. The award, named for the co-founder of Hurwitz & Fine, P.C., is a distinct honor awarded to a lawyer admitted ten years or less who has made a significant impact in the industry.



Sommers Joins Board of USGBC
January 15, 2010
Kirstin Lowry Sommers, of counsel to the law firm of Hurwitz & Fine, P.C., has been elected to the Board of Directors of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Upstate New York Chapter. The USGBC sets credentialing and certification standards for LEED projects. Ms. Sommers is one of only a handful of LEED Accredited Professional attorneys in New York State and the only one in Western New York, which allows her to offer architects, engineers, municipalities and owner-developers a unique opportunity to mitigate risk in "green building." She advises clients in minimizing liability, defining contractual roles in the LEED context, anticipating coverage issues, and conducting a cost-benefit analysis of deliverables.

Evanko Addresses National Audience on Terminations

Ms. Evanko spoke on Termination Issues: Counseling Employers on Avoiding Employment Liability Risks. Seeley Speaks to Nationwide Attorneys on Insurance Coverage

Kohane Honored By PLRB/LIRB With Outstanding Presentations Award
March 23, 2009
At the Annual PLRB/LIRB (Property Loss Research Bureau/Liability Insurance Research Bureau) Conference in Seattle, Dan Kohane was presented with the Claims Conference Outstanding Presentations Award for 2009. He has previously participated as faculty for two years. The award was announced at the Presenters Luncheon on Monday, March 23 where Dan was described by Scott Powell of PLRB/LIRB as a great educator who truly enjoys teaching and mentoring members of the insurance industry with respect to coverage issues. The PLRB/LIRB Claims Conference & Insurance Services Expo (http://www.claimsconf.org) is the largest property and liability claims educational event in the industry. It is an intensive three and a half days of 90-minute concept sessions and technical clinics, half-day workshops and seminars, exhibits, and other training and networking events allowing experienced claims personnel to study, analyze, and debate hypothetical claims situations, theories, and practices with their peers, lawyers, accountants, and other professionals. Over 110 topics, 30 of which deal with liability/casualty subjects, are currently offered. Those with multi-line responsibilities can choose to attend any combination of property and liability sessions. Most sessions qualify for Continuing Education Units from those states with CEU requirements for insurer staff adjuster licensing.

    Perley Heads Local Chapter of National Trial Advocacy Group

    Firm member Michael F. Perley is now President of the Buffalo Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) whose primary mission is the preservation of the civil jury trial sytem with the rights and duties of each American decided by our fellow citizens, not by a bureaucratic governmental agency. The association seeks lawyers who display skill, civility and integrity, and a willingness to help younger attorneys achieve a higher level of trial advocacy and to educate the public about the vital importance of the Seventh Amendment.



    Fine Appointed to Governor's Judicial Screening Committee

    Founding partner Robert P. Fine was appointed by Governor Eliot Spitzer as a member and Vice Chair of the Governor’s Judicial Screening Committee for the Fourth Judicial Department of the State of New York. This committee is responsible for the evaluation of candidates for vacancies on the State’s Supreme Court, County Courts and the Appellate Division within the Fourth Department.

    Our heartfelt congratulations to Dan D. Kohane, who was elevated to President of the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (FDCC) at the organization's Annual Meeting, this year held in Hamilton, Bermuda. Mr. Kohane has served on the Board of Directors since 1997. Mr. Kohane focuses his practice in insurance coverage and civil trial litigation.

    The FDCC is a 70-year old, invitation-only, international organization whose more than 1,300 members include attorneys who specialize in the defense of civil litigation, general counsel, risk managers and insurance claims executives. Mr. Kohane also serves on the Board of Directors of the Defense Research Institute and the Lawyers for Civil Justice.

    Suozzi Named to Head NYSBA's Torts Section

Suozzi has been elected Chair of the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar Association, one of the largest sections of the state bar, with over 3,000 members. Mr. Suozzi heads the firm's Municipal Liability Defense, and Medical Malpractice, Drug and Medical Device groups and focuses his practice in municipal liability, civil trial litigation, medical malpractice and drug and medical device matters.



    Kohane Becomes President-Elect of FDCC

    Dan D. Kohane, a senior partner at the Buffalo law firm of Hurwitz & Fine, P.C., was elevated to President-Elect of the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (FDCC) at the organization’s Annual Meeting, this year held in Carlsbad, California. He just completed a one-year term as Secretary-Treasurer and will become President of the FDCC in August of 2006. The FDCC is an invitation-only international organization whose more than 1,300 members include attorneys who specialize in the defense of civil litigation, general counsel, risk managers and insurance claims executives. Mr. Kohane also joins the Board of Directors of the other national corporate counsel and defense organizations - the Defense Research Institute and the Lawyers for Civil Justice.



    Fine Named to Erie County Stabilization Project Oversight Committee

    Robert P. Fine was asked to serve on the Erie County Stabilization Project Oversight Committee for the Buffalo Niagara Partnership. Mr. Fine will help oversee the activities of some 200 professional sector volunteers from the community who have agreed to participate in this non-partisan, independent analysis of the county’s finances and services. The project seeks to verify the current budget situation, project future budgets, and provide specific recommendations for how Erie County government can provide services to county residents, now and in the future, in a more fiscally-responsible and effective manner. Mr. Fine, asked to join the committee because of his extensive experience in working with businesses and government agencies in Erie County, concentrates his professional practice in Business/Corporate Law, Health Law, Estate Planning and Tax Law.



    Mooney Elected to President of Harmonie

    Kohane Elected to Secretary-Treasurer of FDCC

    Dan D. Kohane, a senior partner in the Buffalo law firm of Hurwitz & Fine, P.C., was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (FDCC) at the organization’s Annual Meeting in Chesapeake Maryland. He will serve a one-year term as Secretary-Treasurer and then will be elevated to President-Elect in 2005. Mr. Kohane will become President of the FDCC in August of 2006. It has been 25 years since an attorney from the northeast has been elected to move through the leadership chairs. Mr. Kohane has been a member of the Executive Committee, the Board of Directors, and a Vice-President of the FDCC.

    A member of the organization since 1989, Mr. Kohane previously chaired the FDCC’s Insurance Coverage section and served as Vice Chair of its Technology & E-Commerce section. He was General Convention Chair for the Winter Meeting of 2002, and was a Program Chair in the Winter Meeting of 1999. He is also founder and webmaster of the nationally recognized FDCC website (www.thefederation.org).

    Founded in 1936, the FDCC is an invitation-only international organization whose more than 1,300 members include attorneys who specialize in the defense of civil litigation, general counsel, risk managers and insurance claims executives. The guiding principles of the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel are summarized in the three words underlying its logo: “Knowledge,” “Justice,” and “Fellowship”. Its objectives and purposes are “to assist in establishing standards for providing competent, efficient and economical legal services; to encourage and provide for continuing legal education of the members and to use the knowledge and experience of its membership for the promotion of public good.”

    Insurance coverage, civil trial litigation, and technology are the focus of his professional activities. He heads the Insurance Coverage, Technology Law and ADR practice groups at Hurwitz & Fine, P.C. He is also a member of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys and the Defense Research Institute, where he served as chair of its Technology Committee.



    State of Israel Bonds Honors Hurwitz & Fine, P.C.

    Robinson Joins Hurwitz & Fine, P.C. as Partner

    Hurwitz & Fine, P.C. is pleased to announce the expansion of the firm’s Estates & Trusts Department with the addition of Edward C. Robinson, who has joined the firm as a partner. The department is growing due to the increased need for retirement and estate planning and the growing trend in Western New York toward an aging population. Mr. Robinson brings 20 years of experience in Estate Planning and Elder Law from his position as a partner at the Williamsville-based law firm of Holland & Robinson. Mr. Robinson frequently lectures and advises clients on the full range of Estate Planning and Elder Law issues, including planning devices such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, health care proxies, living wills and estate tax strategies.

    With respect to his Elder Law practice, Mr. Robinson has significant experience in Medicaid and long-term care pre-planning. He has helped many clients in developing plans designed to protect their assets, submitting Medicaid applications and representing clients at Medicaid Fair Hearings.

    Mr. Robinson is a cum laude graduate of Hobart College where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. He then earned his Juris Doctor degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law in 1983. He is a member of the New York and Erie County Bar Associations.     Fine Elected to Fellows of The New York Bar Foundation

This highly prestigious honor, involving nomination and selection by a group of their peers, is awarded to only one percent of members of the state bar. Election as a Fellow is recognition of outstanding achievement in and dedication to the objectives of the profession and the organized bar.

    Mooney Named to Executive Committee of IADC

    Harry F. Mooney, a partner with the Buffalo law firm of Hurwitz & Fine, P.C., has been elected to the Executive Committee of the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) where he has been a member for 20 years and previously chaired its Legal Malpractice Committee. The IADC, with an exclusive invitation-only membership of 2,500, is the oldest international organization of attorneys representing corporations and insurers.

    Mr. Mooney focuses his practice in product liability, professional liability and large loss and catastrophic injury litigation. He is also president-elect of the nationally networked Harmonie Group, a member of the Professional Liability Underwriters Society (PLUS), and is past President of the Defense Trial Lawyers Association of Western New York.



    Schillaci Named Volunteer of the Year

    Andrea Schillaci was named 2002 Volunteer of the Year by the Board of Trustees of the Buffalo Olmstead Parks Conservancy. Ms. Schillaci joined the Board of Directors of the Buffalo Olmstead Parks Conservancy in 1996 and just completed her three-year appointment as Board Chair.

    The Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy’s mission is to promote, preserve, restore, enhance, and ensure the maintenance of Frederick Law Olmstead-designed parks and parkways in the Greater Buffalo area. His system of parks and parkways in Buffalo is historic because it is the first of its kind in the nation and represents one of his largest bodies of work. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Buffalo's system consists of six parks - Delaware, Martin Luther King Jr. Park, Front, South, Cazenovia, and Riverside - and their connecting parkways and circles.

    It is with deepest sadness and regret that we report that Sheldon Hurwitz, a highly respected insurance law and trial attorney, and a founder of Hurwitz & Fine, P.C., died at the age of 72 after a lengthy illness. In his memory, we share a little bit of his story here. We will all miss him, and are grateful for the lessons and the legacy he leaves behind.

    Sheldon Hurwitz & Robert Fine officially joined forces in 1977. Since that time 25 years ago, Hurwitz & Fine, P.C. has grown from a four attorney firm to one of the largest law firms in Western New York. A shared vision of excellence, a commitment to personalized attention, and a love of our Western New York community brought these four together and soon attracted others with similar dedication. Our firm is now home to some of the most experienced and respected attorneys in the area. Thirty two of us to be exact. And our office has grown to cover two floors of the Liberty Building where we once had just a small office. The year 1977 was a big year for Buffalo. Oh, and there was this blizzard...

    Two of the firm’s attorneys were being recognized by the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar Association at their annual dinner at the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum in New York City.

    Firm member Paul J. Suozzi is being presented with the Committee Chair of the Year award in recognition of his contributions as Chair of the Municipal Law Committee of the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. Mr. Suozzi heads the firm’s Municipal Liability Defense, and Medical Malpractice groups and focuses his practice in municipal liability, civil trial litigation and medical malpractice.

    Firm associate Kevin T. Merriman is being presented the Young Lawyer of the Year Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field by the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. Mr. Merriman is editor of the firm’s electronic newsletter, Coverage Pointers, and focuses his practice in insurance defense, insurance coverage and environmental and toxic tort litigation.



    Perley Joins Hurwitz & Fine as Partner

    We are pleased to announce that Michael F. Perley has joined the firm as a partner. Mr. Perley is now a member of the firm’s Litigation department who will focus his practice in municipal law, labor law, and catastrophic injury litigation. Mr. Perley previously practiced law with Walsh, Perley & Wilkins where he specialized in personal injury defense litigation, construction defect work, construction labor law and municipal law.

    Mr. Perley is the Town Attorney of Boston where he has been involved in local government for over 20 years. In 1991 he was a member of the Citizen’s Reapportionment Advisory Committee for the Erie County Legislature which redrew the legislative districts based on the 1990 census. He is also president of the Boston Free Library Association. Mr. Perley is a member of the board of directors of the Youth Orchestra Foundation of Buffalo and the Orchard Park Symphony Orchestra.
