Seeley Presented Prestigious Hurwitz Award By State Bar

Audrey A. Seeley was presented the Sheldon Hurwitz Young Lawyer of the Year Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the field by the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. The award, named for the co-founder of Hurwitz & Fine, P.C., is a distinct honor awarded to a lawyer admitted ten years or less who has made a significant impact in the industry.



Sommers Joins Board of USGBC

Kirstin Lowry Sommers, of counsel to the law firm of Hurwitz & Fine, P.C., has been elected to the Board of Directors of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Upstate New York Chapter. The USGBC sets credentialing and certification standards for LEED projects. Ms. Sommers is one of only a handful of LEED Accredited Professional attorneys in New York State and the only one in Western New York, which allows her to offer architects, engineers, municipalities and owner-developers a unique opportunity to mitigate risk in "green building." She advises clients in minimizing liability, defining contractual roles in the LEED context, anticipating coverage issues, and conducting a cost-benefit analysis of deliverables.

Schillaci Named Fellow of Litigation Counsel of America

Hurwitz & Fine, P.C. is pleased to announce the promotion of Shawn P. Martin and Audrey A. Seeley to Members of the firm, both having served as associates with the firm since 2001. Mr. Martin is an experienced trial attorney who focuses his practice in civil litigation matters including municipal liability, municipal counseling, personal injury, commercial transportation, premises liability and products liability. Mr. Martin also serves as the Town Attorney for the Town of West Seneca wherein he handles day to day legal matters for the town, including but not limited to planning and zoning issues. Mr. Martin has extensive experience working with and defending law enforcement officials and has been directly retained to conduct both internal and external municipal investigations. Mr. Martin is Chair of the Municipal Law Committee of the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. Ms. Seeley focuses her practice in insurance coverage, No-Fault coverage, municipal and environmental counseling, and governmental liability. Ms. Seeley is the Village Attorney for the Village of Springville. Ms. Seeley routinely counsels insurers on personal and commercial lines insurance policies. Ms. Seeley handles No-Fault arbitration and litigation, as well as loss transfer and special arbitrations, is leader of the firm’s No-Fault practice group and authors a bi-weekly column on recent developments in No-Fault law for the firm’s electronic newsletter “Coverage Pointers”. Evanko Addresses National Audience on Terminations

Firm President Ann E. Evanko is addressing a gathering of corporate and insurance company executives at the Harmonie Group's 2009 Spring Conference, this year held in New Orleans. Ms. Evanko spoke on Termination Issues: Counseling Employers on Avoiding Employment Liability Risks. Ms. Evanko heads the firm's Employment Law Practice Group and is regularly engaged in employment law risk mitigation strategies and counseling.



Seeley Speaks to Nationwide Attorneys on Insurance Coverage

Ms. Seeley focuses her practice in insurance coverage counseling and regularly provides training and counsel to insurers on commercial and personal lines insurance policies and no-fault insurance.

Kohane Honored By PLRB/LIRB With Outstanding Presentations Award

At the Annual PLRB/LIRB (Property Loss Research Bureau/Liability Insurance Research Bureau) Conference in Seattle, Dan Kohane was presented with the Claims Conference Outstanding Presentations Award for 2009. He has previously participated as faculty for two years. The award was announced at the Presenters Luncheon on Monday, March 23 where Dan was described by Scott Powell of PLRB/LIRB as a great educator who truly enjoys teaching and mentoring members of the insurance industry with respect to coverage issues. The PLRB/LIRB Claims Conference & Insurance Services Expo (http://www.claimsconf.org) is the largest property and liability claims educational event in the industry. It is an intensive three and a half days of 90-minute concept sessions and technical clinics, half-day workshops and seminars, exhibits, and other training and networking events allowing experienced claims personnel to study, analyze, and debate hypothetical claims situations, theories, and practices with their peers, lawyers, accountants, and other professionals. Over 110 topics, 30 of which deal with liability/casualty subjects, are currently offered. Those with multi-line responsibilities can choose to attend any combination of property and liability sessions. Most sessions qualify for Continuing Education Units from those states with CEU requirements for insurer staff adjuster licensing.
