Harry Mooney

Mr. Mooney joined Hurwitz & Fine as a Member in 1990, coming to the firm from Moot & Sprague where he worked from 1977-1990. Mr. Mooney served as Vice President on Hurwitz & Fine’s board of directors, as Chair of the Litigation Department and as head of the firm’s 24 Hour Emergency Response Team. He focused his practice primarily in litigating large loss cases in product liability, professional malpractice, toxic tort, trucking, railroad and other catastrophic injury matters. He regularly conducted presentations and training to in-house counsel, claims professionals and legal professionals across the country.

Recognized nationally and locally, Mr. Mooney was named to the list of the Top 10 or Top 50 Lawyers by New York Super Lawyers Magazine for the past 10 years. Mr. Mooney was named Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in America for Buffalo Product Liability Litigation Defense (2012) and Professional Malpractice Law Defense (2013, 2014). He served as president of the Defense Trial Lawyers Association of Western New York where he was named Defense Trial Lawyer of the Year (2007), receiving the Robert Kiebala Memorial Award which is awarded annually to a defense attorney who has made significant contributions to the profession. He was also named to the Business First lists of the Who’s Who in Law and the Legal Elite of Western New York.

Mr. Mooney was a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, a highly selective invitation-only honorary society representing less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers, vigorously vetted for skill, expertise and their high level of service. He previously served on the board of directors of the International Association of Defense Counsel and as president of the Harmonie Group, a carefully vetted national network of defense attorneys who work to ensure top quality national coverage for their clients.

Mr. Mooney was active in the various bar associations, working to ensure proper representation of clients within the legal system. He was Vice Chair of the Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section Commercial Transportation Litigation General Committee of the American Bar Association; a member of the Torts, Insurance, and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar Association, having served as Chair of its Special Committee to Improve the Civil Justice System, Vice Chair of its Civil Practice Law and Rules Committee and Chair of the Professional Continuity & Responsibility Committee and was a member of the Ethics Committee of the Erie County Bar Association. Mr. Mooney was also a highly regarded certified mediator and was appointed to the Mediation Panel for the United States District Court, Western District of New York.

He authored numerous professional articles in national publications on specialized disciplines in the practice of law. Most recently, Mr. Mooney co-authored the chapter on New York State law for the American Bar Association’s “The Law of Lawyer’s Liability”, a fifty-state survey of legal malpractice prepared by the Professional Liability Committee. The chapter explains the elements involved in prosecuting and defending legal malpractice claims in New York State.

He was also active in the WNY community he loved, serving on the boards of numerous community and civic organizations including Studio Arena Theater, David R. Fendrick Theater Fund, Shea’s O’Connell Preservation Guild, Curtain Up, Junior Achievement of WNY and Ransom Oaks Community Corporation.
